Delivering open an honest feedback for the first time can be challenging. Fred suggests the best thing to do is to own the feedback, and say what your expectations are to be able to deliver as a performant team.

Feedback improvement should also be about owning it together. If there are performance targets, then both the manager and the team member need to commit together to address the target. If there's an emphasis on the team member, then this puts strain on the relationship.
